Editor's NoteBelow is the English summary of an Chinese article on BIBS, which is entitled “BIBS-Intergrating Chinese and Western Cultures and Striving to Deliver the Best Bilingual International Education.” It was pulbished on People’s Daily, the state media of China, on October 20, 2016.BIBS-Intergrating Chinese and Western Cultures andStriving to Deliver the Best Bilingual International EducationBy Zhang Shuo, People’s Daily reporter “Hi, how come you have just returned to school? We started our term one month ago!”“Well, I have just arrived from China. My arrival has been delayed because of a visa issue.”“Wait a minute, you are not originally from the U.S.? But, boy oh boy, you speak like a native!”The above conversation took place in a high school in California in 2014 when an American fellow student was trying to greet Yaoyao, a new international student from China and an alumnus of Beanstalk International Bilingual School(BIBS) in Beijing. The fully-fledged Beanstalk International Bilingual School (BIBS), which Yaoyao attended since his kindergarten years, is an international school which provides bilingual K-12 international education to the Chinese and expatriate communities in China.Ms. Kathy Shi, Founder of the Beanstalk Education Group, pledges that “Beanstalk strives to provide an engaging and balanced international curriculum in supportive and stimulating environments to encourage our students to develop as bilingual, multi-cultural and globally-minded citizens with strong Chinese roots.” Fostering A Global VisionA visit to the BIBS Upper East Side(UES) will see Chinese and foreign students enjoying their school day.“Dear all, we are going to brainstorm and talk about who we are and what we are capable of doing.” Ms.Krysten Becker, a teacher from Ontario, Canada, was hosting a class session on “individual, society and health education.” Seats have been arranged in three groups with eight tables in each group in the grade-two classroom. One student raised his hand and stood up to introduce himself in English. “My name is Edward. I am a boy. I love playing football and I plan to join our school football team.” “Who we are”is an inquiry into the nature of human beings, the very first inquiry topic for this year. The school has incorporated this topic into the subjects of all disciplines including Chinese language, math, PE, science and individual and social studies. This way, student would be able to have an in-depth exploration of the nature, beliefs and values of human beings and understanding of human relationships, rights and responsibilities.Innovative courses like these are part of the International Baccalaureate(IB) curriculum BIBS adopts to provide students with a higher standing point for an education of international standards and a much smooth transition to future international studies. Currently BIBS Upper East Campus (K-6) offers certified IB Primary Years Programme(PYP). Its Shunyi Campus offers certified IB Middle Years and Diploma Programmes. Additionally, BIBS is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) which allows its students to graduate with the equivalent of a United States high school diploma. Celebrating Our Chinese RootsAs an international school, BIBS classrooms and campuses teem with embodiments of the Chinese heritage-Chinese traditional furniture, paintings and decorations. In a classroom which features exquisite Chinese traditional screen, beautiful hand-made Chinese knots, adorable clay figurines from Wuxi, and tiger head shoes, Hanhan, a sixth-grader at BIBS, felt so proud that she had learned to paint grapes with a Chinese brush pen. All other students were equally proud and excited to see the lovely grapes they drew the Chinese way.Ms. Kathy Shi, BIBS founder, believes that a true international education would be able to combine and intergrate seamlessly the essence of Chinese and international cultures and be delivered to BIBS’students in a customized way. This is why BIBS provides its students access to a variety of elective courses on Chinese heritages. Chinese ink painting and caligraph, appreciation of Chinese traditional poems and local operas, you name it! Qinqin, a fifth-grader at BIBS and a huge fan of Chinese traditional paper-cutting,said,“No matter where I would study in the future, Chinese language and culture would remain the most beautiful things in this world to me.” Ms. Kathy Shi’s idea of building a Chinese school which provides a well-balanced bilingual international education that beautifully fuses the essence of Chinese and international cultures has taken its shape at Beanstalk. Standing on the Global StageYaoyao, who was mistaken by American classmate as a native-speaker, has achieved extraordinary academic excellency at his high school. He believes that it was his BIBS education which has prepared him to be highly adaptive in adjusting to different environments and cultures.Yiyi, a fourth-grader at BIBS, enjoys at school academic exploration and his efforts in finding his own answers after independent thinking and research. “What is the color of the sky?” Different students have different answers. “It is blue!” “No, it is gray!” But why so many varied answers? Students are therefore asked to conduct secondary researches to find out their own answers. Yiyi said:“I’ve read many books on this topic. Now I understand the reason behind a polluted sky and the importance of maintaining a balance between developing our needs and preserving the nature.” Craig Boyce, BIBS’Head Foreign Principal, explained that“we seek to empower our studetns at BIBS with inquiry-based learning which successfully engages our students in independent learning by intergrating research, analysis, and problem-solving skills.Over its 23 years of history, the Beanstalk Education Group has grown from a small kindergarten of six students to a fully-fledged K-12 education group providing a uniquely balanced bilingual international education to over 10,000 students in campuses in Beijing, Chengdu, Kunming, Nanjing, Xi’an and Hainan. Step by step, Beanstalk has been walking steadily towards the success it desires and a stage of its own!
